Chiavari chair dimensions and weight capacity, explained

Most chair problems are fit problems. A chair 5 cm too tall for the table looks wrong in every photograph, and no amount of styling fixes it.

Most chair problems are fit problems. A chair that is 5 cm too tall for the table looks wrong in every photograph, and no amount of styling fixes it. These are the numbers that matter, and how they interact.

The numbers we publish

Seat height45 cm
Weight per chair4 kg (steel) · 4.6 kg (resin) · up to 7.2 kg (upholstered)
Load capacity300 kg (static)
Stacking10–12 per stack, woven bag
Loadingup to 1,420 chairs per 40HQ

Overall height, width and depth vary by model. Ask for the drawing of the specific chair before you commit to a room layout.

Seat height is a relationship, not a number

45 cm is only useful in relation to the table. Standard banquet and dining tables are 75 cm high, which leaves a 30 cm gap — enough for a guest to cross their legs, close enough that elbows rest naturally.

Drop to a 40 cm seat with the same table and the chair reads as a child's; raise it to 48 cm and guests perch. If you are matching chairs to furniture the venue already owns, measure the table before choosing the chair, not after.

Load capacity is a static figure

Our published 300 kg is a static load: a weight placed on the seat and left there. It is not the same as the abuse a chair takes when someone drops into it or stands on it to reach a decoration.

That is why we publish it as "300 kg (static)" rather than as a working load. If a tender document asks for a dynamic rating, ask for the test report rather than assuming the static figure transfers.

Weight decides crew size and freight

At 4 kg, one person carries eight chairs comfortably. At 7.2 kg, the same eight chairs are a two-person job and a health-and-safety conversation. Multiply by a 300-chair room and the difference is a shift.

Freight works the same way in reverse: lighter frames mean more chairs per container. Our resin range loads up to 2,500 per 40HQ against 1,420 for steel, because the frames weigh less and stack tighter.

Stacking geometry, and why it matters for storage

A stack of 12 chairs is roughly 2 metres tall. That is the practical limit for a two-person lift onto a trolley, and it is why we pack in 10–12 rather than pushing higher for freight efficiency.

For venues with tight storage, the folding range stacks flat and takes a fraction of the footprint — at the cost of a less formal chair in the room.

Measuring a room for chairs

Questions buyers ask

What is the seat height of a Chiavari chair?

45 cm for the models we supply. That is the standard dining height, pairing with a 75 cm table and leaving a 25–30 cm gap between seat and tabletop.

Why does the gap between seat and table matter?

Below about 25 cm, guests cannot cross their legs and the table reads as too low; above 30 cm, elbows sit awkwardly and the room looks under-furnished. It is the single measurement that decides whether a chair and table look like a set.

How much does a Chiavari chair weigh?

4 kg for the steel models, 4.6 kg for resin, and up to 7.2 kg for upholstered auditorium seating. Weight drives crew size and freight, so it is worth confirming per model.

How many stack together?

10 to 12 per stack in a woven bag for our frames. The count depends on the frame profile and whether cushions ship fitted.
